Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
24-session skills group
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a clinically proven treatment for patients with depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, anger problems and other impulsive behaviours. The DBT program involves both an individual counselling and group skills class component. Together, these help individuals build coping and problem solving skills in order to manage intense and difficult emotions. As a person gains a sense of mastery over their own behaviours and emotional experience, they are able to develop a sense of pride and self-worth in these personal accomplishments and in being able to contribute positively not only to their own lives, but also to the lives of others around them.
What is a DBT group? In group you will have a chance to connect with other people who are experiencing similar struggles, and learn skills together that will help you meet your goals. Skills that are covered within the program include mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and walking the middle path. Through these skills individuals will learn to understand, name and change their emotions, learning to survive and manage through crisis periods, and learn how to foster self-respect as they maintain healthy relationships.
What is expected of group participants? A typical DBT group program consists of 24 sessions between 1.5-2hrs in length. The group meets weekly at a designated meeting time, in which every participant contributes to both session discussion and skills practice. It is both recommended and expected that participants also has an individual therapist that they can meet with on a regular basis who is able to support them with the skills integration in their personal lives.
When is the next group? We are currently accepting new participants for a closed DBT group, beginning in September 2025. This group takes place on Sunday evenings with a start time of 6pm and will be 1.5-2 hours in length. There is an autumn session of 12 meetings, and a winter session of 12 meetings. Session dates: September 14 - December 14th, 2025 - no session October 13th and November 9th Two week break for Christmas Sessions resume January 4th - March 29th, 2026 - no session on March 8th
What is the financial committment? The total cost for the program is $2400. This fee helps to cover the cost of the facilitator & co-facilitator, space rental and course materials. Participants have the option to pay in one or two installments. Refunds are available upon request minus a $150 administration fee. Refunds are not issued for sessions already attended.
